Orkney Islands is an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, situated off the north coast of Scotland, which has about 70 islands of which 20 are inhabited.

Orkney is 16km north of coast of Caithness. Orkneys main settlement is Kirkwall. The local people are known as Orcadians and have inherited a rich body of folklore. Ferries serve both to link Orney to the rest of Scotland and also to link the various islands of the archipelago. Orkney also has an airport, Kirkwall Airport.

There are 13 Special protection Areas and 6 Special areas of Conservation in Orkney. Renowned for its diversity of flora and fauna. Tourism is a major contributor to the economy with attractions such as  Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar stone circle and its international festivals including the Orkney International Science Festival and the St Magnus international Arts festival.
